Marjorie ("Margie") Smith works with plaintiffs to develop comprehensive settlement plans that may include structured settlements, trusts, Medicare Set-Asides, and other settlement solutions. She also designs and implements deferred compensation plans for attorneys.
A Certified Financial PlannerTM professional and Registered Investment Advisor*, Margie considers all options for how settlement funds may be maximized and coordinated with all aspects of a client's financial life. When attorneys entrust their clients to Margie, they know that she will provide a comprehensive consultation and, when desired, a thorough examination of a client's general financial condition. As attorneys work to finalize a settlement, Margie and the client may address financial matters such as investments outside of a structured settlement, tax planning, insurance coverage, estate planning, retirement planning, and funding for a child's education. When Margie recognizes a need for more intensive help in these other areas, she is able to refer the client to a trusted expert in the appropriate field. By the time, the attorney has completed the case wrap-up, Margie will have the client in the best possible shape for post-settlement life.
Before working as a settlement consultant, Margie taught high school and college English. She feels that her background in teaching makes her an especially effective communicator with those who are unfamiliar with legal and financial phrasing.
Margie received her undergraduate degree from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, and her Master's Degree in British literature from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. She earned her Certified Structured Settlement Consultant designation from the Mendoza College of Business at Notre Dame University.
*Margie is an Investment Advisor Representative through Ford & Smith Consulting, Inc., the Registered Investment Advisor entity that she formed in 2017.
