Retail Annuities
Not every settlement dollar is placed into a structured settlement. Many claimants elect to receive some or all of their settlement as a lump sum, and these funds, along with maturing structures, IRAs, 401(k) rollovers, and other household assets, often lack a suitable long-term vehicle. Retail annuities offer an insurance-backed option for putting this money to work, complementing rather than replacing the structured settlement.
Retail annuities generally fall into four categories spanning a spectrum of risk and growth potential:
- Multi-Year Guaranteed Annuities (MYGA): a fixed, guaranteed interest rate with full principal protection, comparable to a certificate of deposit.
- Fixed Indexed Annuities (FIA): growth linked to a market index with a zero-loss floor, suited to clients seeking upside potential without exposure to market risk.
- Registered Index-Linked Annuities (RILA): a defined level of downside risk through a buffer, in exchange for higher growth potential than an FIA typically allows.
- Single Premium and Deferred Income Annuities (SPIA/DIA): conversion of a lump sum into a guaranteed income stream for clients seeking income they cannot outlive.
Our Sage retail annuity specialist typically handles quoting, carrier comparisons, and case support through policy issuance, while the referring consultant remains the primary point of contact for the client throughout the process.
Common opportunities include clients who declined a structured settlement, previously disbursed funds without a current plan, older structures approaching final payout, non-settlement assets such as inheritances or retirement accounts, and family members of a claimant who may benefit from similar planning.
Retail annuities provide tax-deferred growth, not tax exemption, and are distinct from the tax-free treatment available under a properly executed structured settlement.
